Baby Talk

Many studies have proven that there is a positive link between how much parents and care-givers talk to infants and language/speech development. Here are just two examples:

I talked to Baby Boy Sprout constantly when he was a newborn, then infant, then toddler and I still do, now that he’s a preschooler. There were many times when I felt silly, especially when we were out.

I would say things like “Mama’s putting on her shoes”; or “Mama’s making your bottle”; or “Mama’s putting shampoo in her hair”; or “Mama is eating cereal”. I used descriptive words but short sentences: “Mama loves your blue shirt” or “Mama has a round red ball”. And there were many times I didn’t even use sentences, just phrases: “yummy bananas”, “soft blanket”, “tummy kisses”. I also used a rythmic and musical tone.

We also listened to alot of music. All kinds from lullabys to classical to baby dance music. Anything where he would hear voices.

Trust me, while I felt silly constantly talking, it was a way for us to bond. And, I didn’t feel so alone at home.

I truly believe that my constant talking was the main reason that Baby Boy Sprout was talking in near complete sentences, and very clearly, by 18 months.

Do you talk to your little ones? Do you think it has helped with language and speech development?

Happy talking! - Mama Sprout
