Lesson from a 4 year old

On Thursday, May 27, our dog of 12 years ran away. Daddy Sprout was out looking for him from 2 am to 4 am and then resumed at 5:30 for another several hours. Nothing.

Prince is a small min pin, barely 12 pounds. We’re surrounded by wooded areas and it just didn’t look good.

At 7:30 am, Daddy Sprout sat with Baby Boy Sprout to tell him the sad news. We were all in tears, just sobbing. Suddenly, Baby Boy Sprout wiped his tears and told us to stop crying.

“I want to see your big smiles. Show me your teeth!” he ordered.

And he took over: “we need to think happy thoughts. Mama, today can we make signs and call the vet and the police? I don’t need a playdate today. I want to help find Prince. Oh, and we need to say a prayer and ask God to watch over Prince.”

I sobbed even more. My very sensitive son was now taking charge. He was in control.

And so we did. We prayed; called the shelters; made signs and put the signs on the doors of over 100 houses! Not a complaint from Baby Boy Sprout. He walked over 4 miles with me, in the humid heat.

As the days past, each time I cried, Baby Boy Sprout would give me a hug and ask me not to cry but to think of happy thoughts.

I’m happy to report that, 5 days later, Prince is now home!! Our neighbor is a volunteer at the animal shelter. She came by to tell us that there’s a dog who fits Prince’s description at the shelter. And sure enough, it was Prince.

It’s nice to have my family “whole” again.

I continue to be in awe of my 4 year old son. He’s continues to amaze me. I learn so much from him.

Take the time to learn from your little one(s). They truly can teach us alot.
